The distance between how others view us, how we view ourselves, what we think we project to show how we perceive ourselves to be, and what we actually project is vast. The last thing we often do before leaving our home, or dressing space, is to check our image one last time. This is where our Mirrorface appears; the facial expression we give ourselves that says we’re “Ready!” Our Mirrorface is different from what we project for portraits we know, or think, might be seen (such as selfies). In each of the final Mirrorface diptychs, there are two portraits of the same subject paired side by side: a simple studio portrait on the left, their Mirrorface portrait on the right.

Subjects did not have any details surrounding what would be asked of them upon entering my studio, other than it would be an interactive portrait session addressing themes of ego and self. During our individual sessions, after first taking the simple studio portrait, I set up for the Mirrorface capture by giving my collaborator a small, hand-generated sound tool while uncovering a mirror placed directly under the camera on the tripod. I left the studio and sat in an adjacent room, with an extended camera release, and no external viewpoint. Using the mirror to privately gaze at their reflected portrait directly under the lens, upon repositioning to gaze this way into the lens itself, when the subject was ready, they signalled for me to click the shutter. This part of the session was completed once the subject felt they had given their individual Mirrorface. This happened quickly for each, as though they were real-time “getting ready.” There was no viewing of the images before the session was completed, it was decided in instinctual reaction in the subject whether their private Mirrorface moment had been caught.
